WPJA Winning Image

I was thrilled on Saturday morning to gain 1st Place for this image in the latest WPJA Quarterly contest. The wedding was Lucy and Dean's at Cardington House in Jersey, back in May. This moment happened so quickly that afterwards I worried that I had not got the decisive point at which the cake started to topple. What I love about this image the most is Dean's expression, completely unaware of what is happening as he poses for his guests.
The Judges comments were as follows :
JUDGES COMMENTS: Stood out, without a doubt. Peak moment, great reaction by photographer. This image could have placed in the humour category as well.
JUDGES COMMENTS: The framing on this is perfect, that moment of the cake cutting. I wonder what made the cake fall, is she really going to catch it? What makes the picture even better is the groom seems completely unaware of what is happening right in front of him. Nice job of paying attention and great reaction.
JUDGES COMMENTS: In many relationships it is the woman who concentrates on the details of making things run smoothly while the man is easily distracted. When, exactly, the groom is going to realise that the wedding cake next to him is toppling over is a large part of this photograph's appeal. Fortunately for him, however, his wife seems to have the situation well in hand. Funny.
